Encontro com José Ruy e visita à Amadora BD 2017 / Meeting with José Ruy and visit to Amadora BD 2017

Os 4 Painéis do Foral de Alhos Vedros / The 4 tile panels of Epistle Forum of Alhos Vedros

The preparation of the panels took three months of intense work.
The pleasure with which the people accepted them and the congratulations they have given me, made up for the effort and postponement of a plane trip, which I had to make, so that they would be ready and placed on the wall at the combined time. Before the Festivities of Alhos Vedros begin, in the 26 of July of 2017.

1-Panel with  Epistle Forum of Alhos Vedros with a frame of inspiration in Manueline architecture, in blue and white and interior with the letter of Foral, in colors, which reproduces in large the first page of the letter of Epistle Forum of Alhos Vedros, original of 1500. A small picture in the lower right also in color, shows King D. Manuel I signing the letter of Foral.
In the lower left corner, the current Portuguese text appears.
Below, a banner with the inscription: "500 Years of the Foral de Alhos Vedros".
Dimensions: 165 cm high by 105 cm wide. (77 tiles of 15 x 15 cm).

2-Panel with several themes of viticulture, of which the old county of Alhos Vedros was a great producer of good quality wines, framed in a composition in which a fair of the era takes place, near the pillory of Alhos Vedros.
Dimensions: 165 cm high by 240 cm wide. (178 tiles of 15 x 15 cm).

3-Panel with several agricultural themes with the "Moorish" well, in main theme, framed in a rural composition. Blue and yellow lace trim and blue and white interior.
Dimensions: 165 cm high by 240 cm wide. (178 tiles of 15 x 15 cm).

4-Panel depicting shipbuilding, salt extraction and fishing. Situated on the Old Pier of Alhos Vedros, with free historical reconstitution.
Dimensions: 165 cm high by 240 cm wide. (178 tiles of 15 x 15 cm).

These last three panels do not pretend to be a portrait of the faithful of the seventeenth century, because there are no iconographic or imaginary documents that report Alhos Vedros in 1500. They are only a historical reconstruction in which I had creative freedom, without evading the theme.

O trabalho de Pesquisa para os painéis de azulejos "Foral de Alhos Vedros", esboços e pintura / The work of Research for the tiles panels "Foral de Alhos Vedros", sketches and painting

From March to July 23, 2017, immense work began on research and selection of images, drawing sketches and painting and baking of the 4 large panels.
The research was time consuming and took more than a month to complete. The images had to present diverse rural and maritime themes, from the harvesting, the rural works, extraction of the salt, shipbuilding and reconstruction work of buildings that are now completely different, as it is the case of the Tide Mill of Alhos Vedros pier, the sketches followed and began the painting work, which occupied me an average of 12 hours a day, including Saturdays and Sundays.

I asked my friend Carlos Gonçalves, photographer and documentalist of "Baixa da Banheira TV", to shoot me in all the phases of the elaboration of this monumental work and that will result in a documentary to be published briefly.

Painéis de Azulejos "500 Anos do Foral de Alhos Vedros"-Tiles Panels "500 Years of the Epistle Forum of Alhos Vedros"

Alguns esboços para os painéis / Some sketches for the panels

Description of the work on the 500 years of the Foral of Alhos Vedros
For the Foral Magazine:

In March of 2017, I received in my workshop a delegation that would come to order a set of large panels that would occupy me from that time until July 23, 2017, when I set the last panel!

In the illustrious entourage, Moita's deputy mayor, Daniel Figueiredo, also an artist, who I know in the sculpture field, the President of the Parish Council, Manuel Graudo, the Higher Technician of the Department of Social Affairs and Culture, Dr. Maria Clara, who has done so much for the dissemination of local history, and the main mentor of the commemorations of the Foral de Alhos Vedros, with the publication of Foral Magazine 2014, since December 2007 and now 10 years, and Also the organizer of the Medieval Fair of Alhos Vedros, which had its first edition in May / June 2008, Vítor Cabral.

From the open and fruitful conversation, the idea was that the seventeenth-century themes of the works to be done in tile panels would be more emphasized for the side of the rural works and activities that took place in those years of 1500, in which the people worked and made the wealth Of the old council of Alhos Vedros to the detriment of the exaltation of the nobility and the clergy of the height.

Based on the theme in the Arts and Crafts of the time, sketches were drawn from an image search that took weeks to consult and select and transform. The most important activities were, in the 19th century, XVI, in Alhos Vedros, agriculture in general and viticulture in particular, which represented a large part of the land cultivated in vineyards, salt extraction and fishing, construction of ships and caravels, in which, for that, they would have been planted Large pine forests in the county of Alhos Vedros, as well as the trade of locally marketed agricultural products. A panel with the reproduction of Foral de Alhos Vedros, and its translation from archaic Portuguese to present Portuguese, could not be forgotten in this set of four panels.

The Foral Magazine # 13 of June of 2017 published a text and images, very well done graphically, on the panels of the Foral.
